UNDERGRADUATE PREPARATION FOR DOCTORAL PROGRAMS IN DENTISTRY

Pre-requisite courses required for the Dental program may be completed at Oklahoma State University. Pre-Dental students, who meet requirements, must be accepted and transfer to an accredited Dental program.

OU-HSC Dentistry Advisement Worksheet

Students planning to apply to dental schools other than The University of Oklahoma Health Science Center need to check the specific admission requirements of those schools by consulting the pre-dental advisor at the school of interest. Information for all dental schools in the U.S. and Canada are available at American Dental Education Association.

CREDIT HOURS AND GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA):  All applicants to The University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry must present a minimum of 90 semester credit hours from an accredited college or university.  Applicants with only the minimum, however, are not encouraged to apply unless they have demonstrated exceptional personal and intellectual maturity. In addition to the minimum hours, applicants must present a minimum grade point average of 2.5 (A=4.0) with a minimum grade of "C" in each required course.

DENTAL ADMISSION TEST (DAT):  All applicants to dental school must take the American Dental Association's Dental Admission Test. Students should complete all the required courses before taking the DAT. To prepare for the DAT, students may obtain information at http://www.ada.org.

QUALITY OF CURRICULUM:  Pre-Dental students should choose a curriculum that demonstrates a capacity to handle the rigors of dental school.  If they choose the easiest curriculum they can manage, it will be obvious to the Admissions Committee that they have been protecting their GPA.  It will certainly deprive them of the level of preparation they need for professional school.

SHADOWING EXPERIENCE:  Pre-Dental students should test the depth of their commitment by getting direct exposure to the world of dentistry. Students need to shadow and talk with dentists, visit dental schools, and keep informed about new developments in dental education and dental practice.
