Pre-Health (ie Pre-Medical, Pre-Physical Therapy, Pre-Vet, etc.) are NOT majors. These are simply requirements that the student must fulfill for admission to professional school. Thus, in addition to satisfying these requirements, the student should be working toward a baccalaureate degree in some discipline. There is no recommended major for these students. Professional schools encourage a broad general curriculum in the social sciences and humanities in addition to a high level of competence in the physical and biological sciences. Good communication skills are also important. Beyond this, the best advice for students is to select a major in a discipline that will offer satisfying challenges and provide a viable alternative to professional school if they are not admitted. Although most students planning to apply to Chiropractic, Dental, Medical, Optometry, Osteopathic, Pharmacy, Podiatry, or Veterinary Medicine programs earn a bachlors degree, it is possible to apply for admission after three years (90 hours) of college work. OSU permits pre-professional (health-related) students to choose between two alternative bachelors degree programs: (1) in a specific discipline that requires a minimum of 120 semester credit hours at OSU, or (2) a degree with a biomedical option which allows a "3 plus 1" approach, requiring at least 90 semester credit hours at OSU and up to 30 hours to be transferred from a Chiropractic, Dental, Medical, Optometry, Osteopathic, Pharmacy, Podiatry, or Veterinary School. Below are the four 3+1 options on the OSU campus: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, option: Pre-Medical or Pre-Veterinary

IMPORTANT: Degrees with a Pre-Med, Pre-Vet or Pre-Allied Health designation are NOT necessarily preferred degrees for Pre-Health or Pre-Vet. Students with these degrees are NOT given preferential consideration by professional school admissions. Links: OSU Majors and Options
